James Gunn’s “Superman" reboot topped the box office with a $122 million opening, beating early estimates of $90 million and surpassing last weekend’s "Jurassic World Rebirth" with $40 million. Warner Bros aimed high with this superhero film. Despite DC’s weaker track record compared to Marvel—such as “Justice League" in 2017 earning $229 million and Marvel’s "Infinity War” making $678.8 million in 2018—"Superman’s success suggests individual movies matter more. Recent blockbusters have boosted summer box office revenue by 16%, nearing $5 billion for 2025, with summer earnings at about $2.35 billion. Analysts like Shawn Robbins note hits like “Superman” can narrow gaps, even amid uneven weekends. So far in 2023, three movies have cleared $100 million opening weekends: “A Minecraft Movie," “Lilo & Stitch," and "Superman." "Lilo & Stitch" leads the summer with over $414 million, close to "A Minecraft Movie’s $423 million, revitalizing the box office after a slow start. Upcoming releases include Disney’s “Fantastic Four" on July 25 and potentially a hit sequel, "Freaky Friday," in August. Success depends on major summer releases, Robbins added.
